Each year, PLT visits each and every property protected by a conservation easement to ensure the conservation values of the land continue to be upheld. These annual monitoring visits are an important part of our stewardship work, providing an opportunity to walk the property, document current conditions with photographs, discuss any future land management plans with the landowner or manager, and strengthen the relationships that make conservation successful.
Recently, PLT Stewardship Manager Karie Boone and board member Joe Bushyhead traveled to the South Fork Ranch for an annual monitoring visit, where they met with Ranch Manager Wes to tour the property.
Formerly known as the Hettinger Ranch, the South Fork Ranch conservation easement was established to limit future development while allowing the ranch to continue its agricultural and outfitting operations. The protected property includes one mile of frontage along the South Fork Salmon River and lies adjacent to important Chinook salmon spawning habitat. The easement also safeguards valuable wetlands, riparian areas, and habitat that support a wide variety of birds, fish, plants, and wildlife throughout the South Fork River drainage.
In addition to the standard monitoring activities, Karie and Joe assisted Wes in collecting soil samples. Soil sampling helps establish a baseline for understanding soil health and can provide valuable information about organic matter, nutrient levels, and overall ecosystem function. Healthy soils are the foundation of healthy working lands, supporting productive grazing, improving water retention, and contributing to resilient landscapes for both agriculture and wildlife.
Annual monitoring visits like this one help ensure that conserved lands continue to thrive for generations to come, preserving the landscapes, wildlife habitat, and working lands that make West Central Idaho so special.
